This month we have four new courses starting: two Astronomy ones, a language course and a course on dreams. Brief details are given below.
Constellations of the North
This is a new course using a new format. This short
course provides you with the information needed to
begin finding your way about the night sky. It will
help you to become familiar with star maps of the Northern
Hemisphere (north of latitude 50º N) and get you started on identifying constellations in the night sky for yourself. All the material is provided online and you have the opportunity to ‘Ask the Tutor’ three questions whilst taking the course. This is ideal for anyone wanting to find out more about Astronomy, but not sure where to start. So, if you think you fall into this category, why not give it a go now. Mark Toner will be your tutor and he’ll be happy to welcome you to this new course.
Mark,
our resident Astronomy Tutor (and editor of Cloisters),
has another ‘standard’ Astronomy
course starting this month. Astronomy for Beginners: Practical is a follow-on
course from the very successful Astronomy for Beginners.
As such it assumes that you have either taken that
course or are familiar with some of the basics of astronomy
and of finding your way about the night sky. As the name suggests this is a ‘hands-on’ course
in which you will be guided on how to record astronomical observations, select
equipment (e.g. binoculars, telescopes, cameras – although not necessarily
buying them) and will finally carry out a short project demonstrating some
of the skills you have acquired in the course.
This is our first language course at the New Curiosity Shop and we hope it will be the first of many. With our tutor Tamara Tosoni we have designed what we hope will be an interesting and effective course to get you started on the process of learning Italian - as a tourist, or visitor to Italy. You will be able to listen to some brief dialogues, record yourself speaking and then play them back; you will have regular tutorials with Tamara and other students on the course; and there are interactive and written exercises to help you consolidate your understanding. During the course you will also find out about a number of different aspects of Italian history, geography and culture. Tamara is itching to get started, so sign up now and learn some Italian. (Tamara is busy writing a follow-on course - so make sure you’re ready for that by getting started on number 1 now.)
Have you ever wondered what your dream was about? Did it have a meaning? What
has it to do with your unconscious? If so, then this course is for you. This
seven-week course, tutored throughout by Mike Wilson, is designed to provide
a solid, interesting introduction to dreams. As well as looking at some theories
concerning dreams you will be keeping your own ‘dream journal’ and encouraged to analyse the structure and content of dreams.
