Cloisters: Tamara, you are the tutor on our 'Italian for the Tourist’
course. How did you come to be an online teacher of Italian?
Tamara: Online learning represents a new way of combining innovative learning and teaching techniques with individual tutor support. It offers the possibility to use online and traditional materials, and use online communication tools to interact with tutors and fellow students from all over the world. Personally, I feel at home everywhere: I love languages and I am really fascinated by the mental process involved. Because of my main passion and my multimedia interests I attended a course to qualify in the field. I already had teaching experiences but never into the virtual world, and, I thought it could be an interesting and stimulating experience. Setting up the course wasn't easy as expected but still very enjoyable!
Cloisters: How would you describe the typical student who would take this
course?
Tamara: A very curious person, doesn't matter which age group, eager to learn something about another culture, someone organising a travel to Italy, with no previous knowledge of the language, and not thinking to Italy as (only) a Pizza-Pasta-Mozzarella country.
Cloisters: In what way does an online course particularly help these
students?
Tamara: I taught English and French to adults for few years and teaching adults is really a difficult task. They need learning to be meaningful; autonomous, independent, and self-directed; prior experiences are a rich learning resource; their readiness to learn is associated with a transition point or a need to perform a task; their orientation is centred on problems, not content; they are intrinsically motivated; their participation in learning is voluntary. Multimedia and online learning are a great opportunity for "busy" people. In my course all students, take a virtual travel across Italy, with my help and support. I will be there for chat sessions, talking and suggesting. Languages can be learnt at best in the country where they are spoken...Well, virtually that's partially possible!
Cloisters: Are you planning to provide more Italian courses in the New
Curiosity Shop?
Tamara: Yes, I will - I am working on the second part of this course ..almost ready :-)
Cloisters: Thank you very much for your time, Tamara Tosoni.
