This introductory course covers a range of topics and activities designed to provide the student with an informed understanding of Forensic Psychology.

Adapted from a series of lectures and group work sessions devised for undergraduate psychology students, this particular course assumes no previous knowledge and is, therefore, aimed at anyone with an interest in Forensic Psychology and a willingness to consider, discuss and debate the major issues raised.

1: What is Forensic Psychology? - the key conceptual debates within Forensic Psychology:

2: An Historical Perspective - identify the historical, moral, social and political attitudes that influenced the development and identity of forensic psychology:

3: Offender Profiling - outline, evaluate and debate the theory and practice of offender profiling:

4: Psychological Testing - examine the nature and importance of psychological testing within the discipline of forensic psychology:

5: Eyewitness Memory - this is concerned with how accurately we acquire, retain and retrieve memory information.

Who should take this course?

If you are plotting your first crime thriller, you will find Introduction to Forensic Psychology invaluable. Dave Webb, your hard-boiled tutor, will take you safely by the hand through the murky underworld of the criminal mind.

Or you might be inspired by watching TV programmes such as Cracker or reading novels in which forensic psychology plays a key part.

If you've had a break from learning and want to get back into formal education and have an interest in forensic psychology then this course is an ideal starting point for you.

This course provides a solid foundation for anyone interested in pursuing forensic psychology in greater depth - a number of our students have already gone on to study this subject at college or at university.

All materials are provided online, although the tutor does recommend books for additional reading.

There are no entry requirements.

How long is this course?

About 40 hours, and we suggest you set aside about 4 hours a week - but it's up to you. You will have tutor support for 4 months. You will have access to your course for a year.
